From a single rented room in Chembur to ashrams in three cities — the story of Hamro Chhahari is the story of ordinary people choosing to stand beside cancer patients and their families.
Hamro Chhahari — literally Our Shelter — was started by a few philanthropic souls who watched cancer patients and their attendants sleep on Mumbai's pavements because lodging near Tata Memorial Hospital was unaffordable. They pooled their savings, signed a lease, and put up a hand-painted signboard.
What began as one rented room is today a network of three ashrams across Mumbai, Siliguri and Kolkata — supporting patients from across India, Nepal and beyond, with rooms at the lowest possible charges, free self-cooking facilities, blood arrangement, transport and even dignified last rites in the hardest hours.
Recognising no discrimination of nationality, religion, caste or creed — only mutual dignity and human value.
To bring relief to marginalised section of society and create meaningful opportunities for vulnerable people — especially women and children — so they can lead a dignified, self-empowered life.
A shelter free from every form of discrimination — open to all, serving with compassion. We aim to open many more ashrams across India and abroad to support patients in their hour of need.

On Independence Day, the very first Hamro Chhahari opens in a rented room at Sundar Apartment, Chembur — born from the hardships seen at Tata Memorial.
Through the COVID-19 lockdown, the team distributes ration kits, masks and sanitiser to stranded patients and migrant families across Mumbai.
On Makar Sankranti, the second ashram begins serving patients from North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and the North-East travelling for treatment.
On the auspicious day of Fulpatee, the third ashram opens at Bhawanipur to support patients visiting Kolkata's premier cancer hospitals.
